Ted Kooser
The NecktieHis hands fluttered like birds, each with a fancy silk ribbon to weave into their nest, as he stood at the mirror dressing for work, waving hello to himself with both hands.
Rachel
Ex-Best FriendsA long time ago, We were best friends. The kind that looked alike, talked alike, And even seemed to walk alike. But fall came and school started, That’s when everything started to change. We looked like strangers Talked like we had different languages And walked as though from different planets. Sometimes I’ll see you in the hallways, With your new friends, Me with mine, And for the moment you look me in the eyes, I know, that a long time ago, We were best friends. Rachel is a middle school student.
Cary Rapaport
Autumn LeavesPaper thin confetti Falling down Floating Fire red and yellow Like a hi-liter marker Everywhere! On the sidewalk Crunching under my shoe
Cary Rapaport’s poem was first published in Lexington High School’s Online Literary Journal, 2:25 PM, by The Student Publishing Program, a free creative writing program that gives students the confidence and skills to write for a wider audience, and then publishes and promotes student books with 100% of the profits going back to each school.
